WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION
In this Flower Valley Edu-care Centre near Gansbaai, in the South Western Cape, cob, stone and timber pole construction meant that most of the material was gathered from the building's immediate surroundings. Even the doors, windows and cut timbers were recycled from an old farm shed. The timber paneling provides good insulation, which is balanced by the thermal mass of the cob and concrete floor slabs. Rainwater is collected from the roofs and the grey water is diverted to support a bank of fruit trees. Due to the severe budget constraints, it was not possible to be involved during the construction process, other than for providing for one day of training. This resulted in some of the finishes and detailing being changed from the original design.
