Nieuwoudtville
Caravan Site
“A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed, and in the end must be unmeasurable.”
- Louis Kahn
Nieuwoudteville Caravan Site upgrade for Hantam Municipality has been awarded the silver medal in the Holcim Awards for sustainable construction for Africa and the Middle East and in 2006 was one of the 15 finalists competing for the Global Holcim Awards for sustainable construction held in Bangkok. David Leukes from the BVI consulting Engineers (Capetown) was part of the development team. The project was constructed with local labor and David Roberts was the project manager and training mentor, playing a critical role in bringing things together on-site.
The construction included a full palette of local natural building methods, utilizing a mix of sandstone and straw bale construction with natural plasters, pole structures harvested locally and eco friendly treating with moon phase harvesting and boron based preservative methods. It also made use of rubble trench foundations – recycling rubble from the nearby dump, and a planted roof showcasing the local succulents and bulbs
A Rubble trench foundation has been designed and signed of by the engineer with Straw bale & sandstone construction with natural plasters, pole structures harvested locally and eco friendly treating with moon phase harvesting and boron based preservative methods & a living roof to create a natural barrier to regulate the buildings temperature.
